DunlopTV - Marcus Miller

For more information on the MXR Bass effect pedals seen here, please visit:

DUNLOPTV - MARCUS MILLER
Studio great, engaging performer, composer, arranger, producer...all around amazing guy Marcus Miller took time before a recent sound check at the SF Jazz Festival to talk to DunlopTV about his life, music, and general approach to using effects in a very tasteful and compositional manner.
Marcus was also good enough to play for us and give us some examples of some of the pedals on his board.
The MXR design team had players such as Marcus in mind when the MXR Bass Innovations line came about, and it goes without saying that Dunlop is incredibly proud that these pedals have gotten Mr. Miller's "stomp" of approval and that they meet his high standards of musicality and tone.

Katy Perry, Jodi DiPiazza Sing at Night of Too Many Stars

If everyone gave just $10 by texting STARS to 50555, you could help create many more quality schools, programs and services that are so desperately needed by the growing autism population. Jodi was lucky enough to get into one of the few schools available to help her reach her potential. Please help us give many more kids and adults with autism the same chance Jodi got.

You can donate by going to http://cc.com/donate or donate $10 by texting STARS to 50555 and responding "YES" to our follow-up text.

Katy Perry and Jodi DiPiazza sang "Firework" at the Beacon Theater in New York on Oct 13. "Night of Too Many Stars: America Comes Together for Autism Programs" is hosted by Jon Stewart and raises money with NYCA (New York Collaborates for Autism) to support and create autism programs, schools, and services all over the country. Programs covering everything from the intensive education kids with autism need at a young age to social training for adults who want to contribute in the workplace. We've even created a "Teach the Teachers" program that helps train more teachers to work in the public school systems, for the many kids with autism who can't get into the few quality schools that can help them. 1 in 88 kids are now diagnosed on the Autistic spectrum. Many great organizations support research to unravel the mystery behind this condition. Night of Too Many Stars is working to help people who live with autism now.

Our deepest thanks to Comedy Central and to the incredible performers who supported this cause at "Night of Too Many Stars," including Bill Burr, Hannibal Burress, Louis CK, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Carly Rae Jepsen, Harvey Keitel, Tom Morello, Katy Perry, Amy Poehler, Seth Rogen, Ben Stiller, Sting, Chris Matthews, Bill O'Reilly, Paula Deen, Kevin Bacon, Liev Schreiber, Steve Schirripa, Jenni "J-Woww" Farley and Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola. Bill Hader, Tom Hanks, Jimmy Kimmel, Jack McBrayer, Seth Meyers, Julianne Moore, Al Pacino, Jerry Seinfeld and Deron Williams all participated in the live phone bank. Tracy Morgan, Conan O'Brien, Nick Offerman, Rob Riggle and J.B. Smoove also contributed great comedy to our event. Rebuttal To New York Times Article

My take from reading the New York Times article (Aiming To Stay Plugged In, Janet Morrisey, Sunday September 30,2012) about the distress at Fender is that Fender's issues revolve around an evolving art form that its board of directors simply cannot grasp.  My guess is that its directors may not be educated musicians nor did they live and play guitar back in the late 50's or 60's.   That's significant because if they don’t have grounding in the history of music and moreover, didn't personally experience the absolute intoxication of playing guitar, they can't relate to the human context in music and subsequently plan for the future.  To quote a saying from the 1960’s, “you don’t relate, man”.

The article had quotes from industry insiders that led me to conclude some in the industry think Fender’s downturn is a direct result of today’s economic conditions.  That’s true for the music industry as a whole but Rock ‘N Roll’s epic contribution to culture, whose birth was in the early 1950's, flat-lined in 1970 and hasn’t contributed much since.  The iconic music forms that comprise 'Rock 'n Roll', especially ones using electric guitars like Fender’s 'Strat', are still alive but stayed true to their own formats while an evolving culture moved on with newer music. ‘Metal’, ‘Blues’, ‘Funk’, ‘Pop’, and other contributing Rock ‘N Roll forms can all bank on nostalgia income but are no longer producing anything 'new' that would stimulate cultural significance let alone new demand for electric guitars.  The fact is, Rock ‘N Roll had its day and its time to move forward.

What appears to be crucial to Fender's growth is how much their board of directors will allow themselves to be influenced by music's history and their ability to capitalize on the opportunities that its appreciation will afford.   They might want to ask 'what constitutes classical music and forever why do we insist on calling it classical?  Or,  ‘why may the renaissance shed light on what the future holds for rock 'n roll’?  Instruments alone hold a special place in history.  Some gave birth to music forms while others filled in audible but otherwise non-reproducible sounds.  All instruments, like the jeweled Stratocaster, come into being with a wild enthusiasm at their birth and then glide into a subtler equilibrium.  Fender would do well to accept this historical fact.  The violin, like other orchestral and symphonic instruments, is still enchanting whether playing Mahler or a Tango but has not broken new ground in any music form for decades; the sax is only about 250 years old and it is no longer evolving - and is relegated to mostly jazz.  We need to accept that the evolution of 'rock' is an oxymoron - it is history, much like the birth and evolution of the instruments themselves.  Rock ‘n Roll has gone from being a revolution in the sixties to a resolution.  And like classical music, it will be played well into the future as a reminiscence of the past.

Fender would do well to explore new instrumentation– just as their inspirational founder did sixty years ago.  Instead of following the pack, look at leading by growing the pie – not just trying to capture market share.  Create really new instruments.  Manufacture and sell only the best stuff, and figure you’re in a no-to-slow-growth industry.  Until a new dynamic comes forward like the Beatles and the '60's, the world’s interest in music will be strong but a grasp of marketing its instruments will be allusive.  For sure, the instruments used to produce Rock n' roll will be very flat.  And if it weren’t bad enough having to accept these facts, consider that by the age of 14 most humans have decided on a music format that will serve to define who they are for the rest of their lives.  So that's an additional rub for Fender marketers:  how to sell new stuff to 14 and under - because once they hit 15 they’ve decided on their defining music format and it may very well not include playing a guitar.

The good news is that music is an integral part of living.  It will always be here in many forms: singing, dancing, humming, beating, and instrumentation; it has been so since the dawn of man. Continually creating and implementing new paths for people to maximize their enjoyment of music will result in music industry growth.  If its growth is to be predicated on the demographic that generally built and rallied 'Rock 'n Roll’ then Fender ought to give the adolescent and early teenager something cool...something that ignites them, something that makes them want to twist and shout, something that brings them together, and something that defines them.  Elvis did that, the Beatles did that, and Rock did that. Rock doesn't do it anymore.

"At this point, who'd want to sit through another incendiary guitar solo?" said Eric Clapton, a guitarist. "There's really only so much you can do with the thing. The guitar has had a nice run, but it's time to move on."

Stan Houston was born in 1952.  In 1966 he began performing on the guitar throughout the greater San Francisco area.  He has traveled extensively throughout the world as an engineer, manufacturer, and business developer.  Mr. Houston lives with his wife and family in California.

Paul Lansky "Travel Diary" performed by the Meehan/Perkins Duo

Travel Diary is a kind of meditation on travel, particularly for those who don't do it that much. While not literally programmatic, each movement has some characteristics that reflect the sense of its title.

The first movement, "Leaving Home," surveys the percussion ensemble, looking around to see what we've packed for the trip, making sure we have what we need. In the second movement. "Cruising Speed." we get onto the highway or into the air and are on our way.

The third movement, "Lost in Philly," was inspired by a minor disaster I once had after packing my wife and two small children in the car for a trip from Princeton to Los Angeles and promptly taking a wrong turn leaving us searching for a way to get past Philadelphia (with the younger child asking "Are we there yet?")."
- Paul Lansky

MEEHAN / PERKINS DUO

Since its founding in 2006, the Meehan/ Perkins Duo (Todd Meehan and Doug Perkins) has redefined the American percussion duo through its diverse commissions and engaging performances. The Duo has been called "superb young players" by the New Yorker and "gifted percussionists" by the Wall Street Journal. Dedicated to creating a new body of work for the percussion duo genre, to date the Duo has collaborated with composers David Lang, Paul Lansky, Nathan Davis, John Supko, and Matt McBane to expand the repertoire and produce eclectic new acoustic and electro-acoustic works for percussion. The Duo has shared this music with audiences throughout the country, including performances at Weill Recital Hall, the Ojai Music Festival, Monadnock Music, the Yellow Barn Festival, the International Festival-Institute at Round Top, the Stone, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, and abroad in St. Petersburg and Petrozavodsk, Russia.

February 2011 marked the release of the Duo's first recording on New World Records entitled "Restless, Endless, Tactless -- Johanna Beyer and the Birth of American Percussion Music". The recording, a joint project with the Baylor Percussion Group, chronicles a largely unknown body of early percussion works from the 1930′s written by Johanna Beyer, Henry Cowell, Harold Davidson, Ray Green, John J. Becker, and Doris Humphrey. The release was praised as "immaculately played by the duo" by the BBC Music Magazine and "an engaging experience" by Gramophone. Fanfare Magazine perhaps best sums up the recording by stating "This is a must-hear for anyone remotely interested in the development of music in the past century and is strongly recommended."

The Duo is currently undertaking its largest commissioning project to date, engaging composer Jonathan Leshnoff for a Concerto for Two Percussionists and Orchestra. The work will be premiered June 2012 with the Texas Festival Orchestra at the Round Top International Festival under the baton of Michael Stern. Subsequent performances will take place during the 2012-2013 season with the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, and the Baylor Symphony Orchestra.
