Local Area Musicians: Palindrome: The Bryan Girard/Graham Bruce Quintet

PALINDROME: The Bryan Girard/Graham Bruce Quintet

Palindrome is a truly unique group comprised of some wonderful bay area musicians. Originally formed in 2003 to showcase the compositional skills of writer/arranger Graham Bruce, the band’s repertoire now includes over 100 original tunes with contributions by various members. The music is harmonically complex and challenges both the performer and the listener. Moreover, it is powerful, compelling, and always moving.

Over the years, there have been some personnel changes. Palindrome alumni include the great drummer Danny Spencer (formerly with Joe Henderson and Dexter Gordon), bassist Chris Amberger (Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard) and Andre Sumelius, one of the best drummers of the new generation.
In addition to saxophonist Girard and trumpeter Bruce, the current group includes San Francisco’s favorite pianist, Lee Bloom, drummer Jim Zimmerman (who has toured for years with Cleo Laine and Diane Schurr), and the amazing Ian Dickenson, whose bass playing never fails to astound musicians and audiences alike.

Check out the album and listen to a few tracks: http://beta.cdbaby.com/cd/palindrome

ABC Music Band Programs

It is no secret that music in our schools is suffering due to drastic budget cuts. The sudden reduction and in many cases complete loss of school band programs has created a void where a whole generation of new students is losing the opportunity to experience the magic of music. Band music programs allow students to not only excel with group working skills and creativity but has also been shown to dramatically improve student's abilities in everything from math to critical thinking skills; and in music no one sits on the bench.

At ABC Music o
ur goal is to provide the most top-notch music programs available in the bay area to the wonderful communities of Livermore and Benicia. With a focus on, but not limited to elementary level band classes, we strive to help bridge the gap in our students' education that has arisen due to recent state and federal budget cuts. We offer a variety of group programs, both in conjunction with the PTAs at many of the public elementary schools in Livermore and Benicia as well as privately at our stores. By providing these classes, ABC Music can equip students with the knowledge of instrumental music that is crucial in the building of confidence and creativity for a well rounded and successful individual.

ABC Band Programs started in Livermore in 2010 as an after-school elementary band class held twice per week at the Bothwell Center for the Arts on 8th Street in light of Livermore’s budget cuts to elementary music. In the same school year, ABC was invited to begin instructing students at Arroyo Seco Elementary that following January. In its second year, 2011-2012, ABC Music expanded the program by adding Emma Smith Elementary. The 2012-2013 school year will see the addition of our third school site, Rancho Las Positas Elementary. Our music programs in Benicia have been engaging the community for even longer.

Program Description/Curriculum: Open to any Livermore or Benicia students in the 4th or 5th grade, students are taught the fundamentals of playing an instrument – flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, or percussion. Our curriculum is aligned with LVJUSD’s and BUSD prior standards, using the exact same progressive method book (Standards of Excellence) and instructional approach that district teachers used before classes were cut, while also adding newer more engaging music pieces and approaches for a new generation of students. Students perform twice per year in a Winter Concert and a Spring Concert, demonstrating their new-found abilities for family and friends.

Teaching Staff: Our teachers are highly qualified instructors holding a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in music. Often many of our instructors have even higher qualifications, such is the case in our Livermore branch where both teachers currently instructing hold Master’s degrees in music.

For more information, call 707-746-7565 at our Benicia store, or 925-443-1244 at our Livermore store.

Why Americans Don’t Like Jazz - DYSKE.COM

The current market share of Jazz in America is mere 3 percent. That includes all the great ones like John Coltrane and the terrible ones like Kenny G (OK, this is just my own opinion). There are many organizations and individuals like Wynton Marsalis who are tirelessly trying to revive the genre, but it does not seem to be working. Why is this? Is there some sort of bad chemistry between the American culture and Jazz? As ironic as it may be, I happen to believe so.

One day, I was talking to my wife about the TV commercial for eBay where a chubby lady sings and dances to an appropriated version of “My Way” by Frank Sinatra. The lyrics were entirely re-written, and “my way” was transformed into “eBay”. I told her that they did a good job in adapting the original song. Then she said: “Ah, that’s why I like it so much!” She actually did not realize that it was adapted from Sinatra’s song.
