Alone on the beach, composing music to the sound of the wind and the waves. Or the simple joy of a sing-along, with good friends around a campfire.

Enter the world of guitars this weekend in Livermore

Festival features concerts, clinics, contest and latest equipment
by Dolores Fox Ciardelli

Guitar Fest LIVE! returns to the Tri-Valley for a three-day run at the Bankhead Theater in Livermnore starting Friday with free workshops and concerts, and a chance for acoustic guitar players to share their skills before audiences and judges.

"Guitar Fest LIVE! was designed to reflect the broad interests of both guitarists and audiences alike and to represent the many different styles of music within the world of guitars," said Len Alexander, executive director of the Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center, which sponsors the event along with local businesses.

The festival, which is returning for the fourth year, opens Friday with a free show by the Volker Strifler Band on the stage outside the Bankhead Theater, 2400 First St., in downtown Livermore. The music continues with performances inside the Bankhead, and free outdoor concerts and guitar clinics, as well as a showcase of the latest guitar equipment.

ABC Music Source will again host an afternoon of free clinics, this year in its store space at 2156 First St.

"It's a really cool event," said manager Chris Fleckner. "Last year's clinics had players who were already really good, had been playing for decades and decades, and wanted to brush up. We also got kids who are 14 and brought their skateboards."

Some festival performers give the clinics, such as Peppino D'Agostino, who is known for his finger picking, Fleckner said. Others are run by teachers at ABC Music Source. Some workshops are instructional while others are more hands-on.

"One clinic will be Ukulele 101. It's so popular right now," Fleckner said. "It's the cousin or little brother of the guitar. They are very similar but the ukulele is a lot less intimidating."

"Everyone learns three or four chords and can play a few songs," he added.

New this year at Guitar Fest LIVE! is an Acoustic Guitar Competition, for non-professionals 18 and older, with finals taking place Sunday afternoon. Competitions held in past years have attracted players of electric guitars; this year's competition is exclusively acoustic.

The top six entrants, selected by public voting and the input of professionals in the music industry, will be invited to perform before a panel of expert judges and a live audience at Blacksmith Square in Livermore on Sunday, Sept. 16.

The grand prize includes a Voyage-Air Songwriter Series guitar, a recorded song aired on KFOG's Acoustic Sunrise, an article and music video posted on GuitarPlayer.com and a recording session at Studio D Recording. The winner will also have three paid performance engagements at downtown Livermore businesses and a paid spot on stage during the 2012 Livermore Wine Country Festival.

Saturday evening is a performance by the Larry Carlton Trio. Four-time Grammy Award-winner Carlton has been called one of the most admired and imitated guitarists in the world. His legendary solo on Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne" is considered one of the most influential guitar solos of all time. Tickets are on sale at the box office or online at www.bankheadtheater.org. For more festival information, visit www.guitarfestlive.com.
